DB Regio is using hot water to de-ice rolling stock in winter.

GERMANY: Following successful trials of using hot water to de-ice rolling stock in winter, DB Regio has ordered two containerised heating units rated at 560 kW and 2 000 kW from Hotmobil Deutschland.

DB has previously used hot air to remove up to two tonnes of ice from vehicles in a process which could take up to 18 h. According to Hotmobil Deutschland, spraying hot water on vehicles inside a 50 m long shed has cut the process to between 4 h and 5 h.

The heating equipment is installed in a container, with a mobile power unit which can also be used for other purposes.
