EVRAZ’s Nizhny Tagil Steel Plant has entered into a five-year agreement to supply of wheels and steel sections to wagon manufacturer RM Rail. The companies have also ended litigation related to a 2017 wheel supply contract, with the withdrawal of reciprocal financial claims.

Established last year, Liebherr-Transportation Systems (China) has won its first order from a non-Chinese customer, covering the design, supply and servicing of HVAC for 71 coaches which South Korean company Sung Shin Rolling Stock Technology is supplying to Bangladesh and for a further 59 destined for Tanzania. Two HVAC units are to be installed in each vehicle. A dedicated test bench at Liebherr’s Pinghu factory will enable optimisation of the ducting systems.

Siemens Mobility has acquired Canadian company RailTerm, which provides traffic control software, signalling, SCADA and communications technology and infrastructure maintenance and complex systems integration services. The acquisition ‘strengthens our overall rail infrastructure business in North America and further establishes our footprint and customer base in Canada, a market we believe has immense potential’, said CEO Michael Peter on May 26.

Russian Railways and SNCF have signed a three-year roadmap for co-operation to develop hydrogen fuel cell powered passenger and freight trains and their support systems. The accord also envisages co-operation in other types of traction that will reduce the use of diesel fuel.

The Community of European Railway & Infrastructure Companies and the European Transport Workers’ Federation have resumed negotiations at EU level for a binding agreement aimed at promoting the employment of more women in the rail sector. CER said women currently account for 21% of the railway workforce, ‘considerably below’ the 46% economy-wide participation rate of women in the labour market, and for some professional categories the figure is even lower. The negotiations in the European Sectoral Social Dialogue framework started in 2019 but were put on hold as a result of Covid-19.
