JAPAN: Mitsubishi Electric President & CEO Takeshi Sugiyama has announced his resignation, after an internal investigation found that rolling stock heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems and air compressors supplied by the company had not been tested according to documented specifications.

The company said there had been no issues with the safety, functionality or performance of the products already shipped, and it was not aware of any incidents. It had halted shipments as soon as the issues were discovered, and notified train operators and other customers.

It is now only shipping products for which it has confirmed that the inspections were completed properly, and an investigation including external lawyers is underway and expected to report in September.

A number of issues had been identified, the company said on June 30. These included inspections not being performed, tests being undertaken under different conditions to those specified, and or the use of in-house testing procedures differing from those in the specifications.

Reports suggest that the incorrect processes may have been in use for up to 30 years.
