POLAND: PKP Intercity has selected a consortium of Stadler Rail and Newag for a contract to supply 20 Flirt electric multiple-units for long-distance services by October 2015.

The contract announced on August 28 is worth 1·156bn złoty, plus a further 465m złoty for 15 years of maintenance. Bids had also been submitted by Pesa, ZNTK MM and CAF.

The eight-car EMUs will feature 'high quality' interiors suitable for long-distance travel, with 2+1 seating in first class, a buffet car and six toilets. The 3 kV DC units will have a top speed of 160 km/h and be equipped with ETCS Level 2.

Stadler will supply the aluminium bodyshells and is to assemble the driving vehicles and traction systems at its Siedlce plant. Bogies and traction components are to be supplied from Switzerland.

Newag will be responsible for planning the interior fittings and the final assembly of the intermediate cars. It will also be in charge of the assembling the cars into complete EMUs and the entire commissioning process.

The Flirt EMUs are to be deployed on four long distance routes:

  • Warszawa - Bydgoszcz
  • Olsztyn - Warszawa - Kielce - Kraków
  • Gdynia - Bydgoszcz - Łódź - Czestochowa - Katowice
  • Kraków - Łódź - Szczecin.

PKP IC is currently tendering for another 20 EMUs for use on Jelenia Góra - Wrocław - Łódź - Warszawa - Białystok/Lublin and Białystok/Lublin - Warszawa - Koluszki - Czestochowa - Katowice - Bielsko Biała services.
