UAE: Etihad Rail has awarded China South Locomotive & Rolling Stock Corp a contract to supply 240 covered wagons which will be used to carry granulated sulphur from Shah and Habshan for export through Ruwais.

Announcing the contract on September 12, the railway authority said it was working with Abu Dhabi National Oil Co to develop the 266 km route which will carry up to 22 000 tonnes of sulphur a day. Construction is scheduled to begin at the end of this year, with the first freight trains running in 2013.

The line is the first phase of a planned 40bn dirham national railway network which Etihad Rail said would be developed over the next two decades to carry up to 50 million tonnes of freight and 16 million passengers a year.
