at Zillertalbahn freight

AUSTRIA: Freight services are to be reintroduced on the Zillertalbahn narrow gauge line from Jenbach to Fügen-Hart im Zillertal on May 17, under an agreement between operator ZVB, the national railway’s freight business Rail Cargo Austria, the Land of Tirol and wood products company Binderholz.

Around 200 000 tonnes of logs per year will be shifted from the local roads to rail, with transhipment between standard and 760 mm gauge to take place at a new terminal at Jenbach. The logs will be carried in superstructures developed by Innofreight for use on ZVB’s existing wagons. At full capacity three 10 wagon narrow gauge trains will be required, with each train carrying 400 tonnes of wood.

Two locomotives have been hired from the Steiermärkischen Landesbahnen and Pinzgauer Lokalbahn, and €1m is being invested in the transhipment facilities.
