AUSTRALIA: Import-export logistics specialist Qube has ordered 12 EMD GT46 diesel locomotives from Progress Rail for delivery from August 2023.

The 4 500 hp locomotives are intended to support an expansion of Qube’s interstate service between Melbourne and Sydney, which was launched in November with an initial three trains each way per week. These operate out of the company’s automated Moorebank IMEX Terminal in Sydney.

The six-axle locomotives will be compliant with US Tier III emissions standards.

‘These 12 new locos will further strengthen our ability to provide Qube customers with an efficient and regular rail service between Australia two most populous capital cities, for which we expect to see growing demand’, explained the group’s Director of Logistics & Infrastructure John Digney when the order was announced on December 20.

‘Since 2021, Qube has invested significantly in its rail business and grown its locomotive fleet by 32, enabling the efficient and reliable movement of freight via rail and helping get trucks off roads, which has the added benefit of reducing CO2 emissions.’
