UKRAINE: Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has signed a memorandum with Pesa for the supply of trams to the Ukrainian capital and the possible opening of a factory in the city.

The memorandum was signed with Pesa President Tomasz Zaboklicki when Klitschko visited Pesa’s factory at Bydgoszcz in Poland on June 17. Klitschko also rode on a 1 524 mm gauge Twist tram at the factory.

Kyiv is planning to procure 50 Twist trams to replace the oldest cars in its fleet of around 450. ‘Today we sign an agreement not for a specific number of trams, but a memorandum for co-operation over several years’, said Zaboklicki. The order would be worth around €70m, with the financing model to be decided in the next few months. The memorandum also details the construction of a Pesa factory in Kyiv.

‘Our capital must develop if it is to become a fully European city’, said Klitschko. ‘As part of this, we need modern trams to provide ecological, comfortable and futuristic public transport.’
