GERMANY: Construction of the Mainzelbahn tram extension from Mainz Hauptbahnhof West to Lerchenberg was officially launched on May 3.
The 9·2 km metre-gauge line with 15 stops is expected to carry 1 million passengers per year when it opens in 2016.
Of the €83·6m cost, Stadtwerke Mainz is to contribute €31m, with €44m coming from the federal government and €9m from the Land of Rhineland-Pfalz.
