SINGAPORE: The first two of 25 two-car Automated Guideway Transit sets for the Sengkang-Punggol Light Rapid Transit network have been formally handed over to SBS Transit by manufacturer Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
The rubber tyred driverless trainsets are now on test ahead of entry into passenger service from Q3 this year. They will gradually replace the existing single-car vehicles, helping to meet rising demand as the local population increases.
The operator explained on May 9 that the automated light metro trainsets ordered in two batches in 2022 (17) and 2023 (eight) had a ‘sleek, modern exterior’, with energy-efficient LED lighting, newly designed seats offering greater comfort and support and air-conditioning embedded in the roof for cooler and quieter journeys.
