SPOORNET has acquired 20 double-cab Isuzu KB250 road-rail inspection vehicles in a R12m lease-back agreement.

Adapting the vehicles for use on 1067mm gauge railways required the chassis to be modified behind the cab and around the wheel arches. Additional leaf springs have been fitted to the rear axle, and an Isuzu torsion bar provides stability.

The rear road wheels are in contact with the rails when the vehicle is in rail mode, giving a direct correspondence between road and rail speeds. When in rail mode the front road wheels are lifted above the track, and in road mode a locking device prevents the rail wheels from hitting the road surface.

A crew of four can be carried in the vehicles, and accessories include GPS tracking, a rotating warning lamp, a two-way radio and spotlights.
