UNDER AN AGREEMENT signed on August 1 in the presence of President Néstor Kirchner, Alstom is to supply two LRVs for trial operations in Buenos Aires.

The trials will take place on dockside tracks in the Puerto Madero redevelopment area. It is hoped that a 2 km route between Avenida Córdoba and Avenida Independencia will be in operation by the end of the year, with stops every four blocks.

The national and city governments are to meet the cost of infrastructure works, including electrification and signalling, while Metrovías is to operate the trial service. Head of the city government Jorge Telerman said that operations could be extended in due course north to Retiro station and then south towards the La Boca district.

  • The government of Mendoza province is seeking legislative approval for the first phase of a programme to operate LRVs on rail routes serving the city of Mendoza, budgeted at 35m pesos for upgrading the 37·2 km between Panqueha and Maipú via the central station. A fleet of 18 second-hand trams would be acquired from SSB of Stuttgart.
