BANGKOK Metro Co Ltd has selected the Nippon-Euro Subway Consortium as a partner in its 25-year concession to build and operate the city’s Blue line heavy metro. Tunnelling is already well advanced for the 20 km line between Hualampong and Bang Sue, which is scheduled to open in 2004. The 20bn baht deal provides for Nippon-Euro to supply the electrical and mechanical equipment and maintain it for 10 years.

The consortium is led by Alstom, with Mitsubishi Electric and Mitsubishi Corp. Alstom will undertake systems integration, and supply the signalling & communications systems, workshops equipment plus the fleet of 21 three-car Metropolis EMUs. There is an option for an extra four units. Mitsubishi will provide the traction equipment, power supply and automatic fare collection systems, and the platform screen doors. Alstom had already been awarded a separate 4·4bn baht contract for the trackwork and tunnel ventilation systems.
