RENEWAL and maintenance contractor Carillion Rail has purchased Swedish Rail Systems Enterprenad from Heidelberg Cement Northern Europe. SRSE is one of the largest private sector rail infrastructure contractors in Sweden and Norway, with net assets of £6·2m and around 250 employees.

HCNE chose to dispose of its rail maintenance and projects business to concentrate on its core activities, giving Carillion an opportunity to enter the European market. Announcing the acquisition, Carillion Chief Executive John McDonough said ’Transport is one of Carillion’s key growth sectors. In order to expand our rail business beyond the UK maintenance and projects market, we are actively targeting the European rail market.’

Following the takeover, SRSE’s subsidiaries in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland will trade under the Carillion name. Current contracts include £5·6m of enabling works for Banverket on the Malm
