DELHI Metro Rail Corp confirmed on May 1 that it had awarded contracts for all six projects in Phase II of the Indian capital’s metro network, and said work was expected to get underway on all of them shortly.

Construction has already started on the 6·4 km northern extension of Line 2 from Vishwavidalya to Jahangipuri, and on the 6·1 km Line 3 eastern extension to Anand Vihar. Geological tests are underway for the southern extension of Line 2 from Central Secretariat to IIT.

Faced with the need to complete Phase II in time for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, DMRC has outsourced design and construction of the 5·6 km Inderlok - Mundka line and five elevated stations to Bangalore-based IDEB Projects and the Shanghai Urban Construction Group at a cost of Rs1·7bn. n
