The Spanish cabinet has given its approval for contracts to be let for double-tracking 18 km between Vandellós and Tarragona, as part of the Mediterranean Corridor programme to cut the Valencia - Barcelona journey time to 2h 15min. Work includes a 1780m tunnel and a new station to serve Vandellós and L’Hospitalet de l’Infant, and is expected to take 30 months to complete and cost Pts9·77bn.

Of the 249route-km between Tarragona and Valencia, upgrading has been completed on the Vandellós - Oropesa and Sagunt - Valencia sections totalling 148 km. Work is under way on Oropesa - Castelló (23 km) and Nules - Sagunt (20 km). Design is in progress for Castelló - Nules (18 km), as are studies for a link from the Mediterranean Corridor at Tarragona to the Madrid - Barcelona high speed line.
