FERROVIE Nord Milano has taken a further step towards its goal of a 30min journey time for the Malpensa Express airport service. Contracts were awarded at the end of November for relocation underground of the route at Castellanza and associated works to complete double-tracking between Saronno and the airport junction. This will permit doubling of the airport service to 4 trains/h while achieving the desired 30 min journey time. Grassetto SpA will be responsible for the relocation project, with a second contract pending for the new Busto Arsizio Sud station to be built close to the point where FNM’s line passes beneath RFI’s main line.
As these capacity works are completed, new airport services will run through from both Milano Centrale and the Passante cross-city line. Also part of the current project, for completion by 2006, is provision of a north-to-west link between the RFI and FNM lines at Busto Arsizio, allowing an airport service to run from Varese in the north. Another direct Malpensa service, running from Bergamo and Orio al Serio airport east of Milano, will utilise the rehabilitated freight line from Saregno to Saronno to avoid central Milano.
