AUGUST 8 saw the official completion of 25 kV 50Hz electrification on the 550 km route linking the cities of Shenyang and Harbin in northeast China. Regular electric services were expected to start by the end of the month. Electrification of the 400 km Shenyang - Dalian section is due to be complete by November.

The DM350m contract to electrify the 949 km corridor from Harbin to Dalian was awarded to Adtranz and Siemens in May 1999, financed by a credit from Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (RG 6.99 p337). Consortium leader Adtranz Fixed Installations is now part of Balfour Beatty Rail Power Systems.

  • Construction work is expected to start later this year on a 277 km link between Ganzhou in Jiangxi province and Longyan in Fujian, costed at 6bn yuan. A project office has been set up in Longyan, and land acquisition is under way.
