Station lighting for the Heathrow Express airport terminal stations due to open in June was specially developed by Crompton Lighting under a £500000 contract. Sophisticated optical design software ensured that the fluorescent platform lighting conformed to the architect’s requirements, giving a pleasant ambience on the platforms and no glare for train drivers.

Both the housing and trunking are made from aluminium extrusions, with suspension arms and end caps being die castings. A glass cover with gasket seal prevents dirt or moisture getting into the housing.

Plug and socket connections, with a leading earth, between each of the main components allows rapid replacement without the need to turn off the power supply. Design of the housing permits lamp replacement without the risk of touching any optical surfaces.
