GERMAN Railway placed contracts with Bombardier and Alstom on December 28 for 78 four-car EMUs for the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn, with an option for a further 72.

Due for delivery between March 2008 and October 2010, the 140 km/h low-floor Class ET422 units will be used on route S7 from Düsseldorf to Solingen and S9 linking Haltern, Bottrop, Essen and Wuppertal. DB operates both routes under a 15-year contract from Nordrhein-Westfalen.

All 312 car bodies and the 156 end bogies will be built by Alstom LHB at Salzgitter, where 51 sets will be assembled. Bombardier will supply the electrical equipment from Mannheim and articulation bogies from Siegen, and will assemble 27 trains at Hennigsdorf. Bombardier’s share of the deal is worth €224m and Alstom’s €119m.
