SIEMENS Transportation Systems has been awarded the €363m contract to supply electrical and mechanical equipment for the first two lines of the Kaohsiung metro in Taiwan. The contract was formally signed in Singapore by Kaohsiung Rapid Transit Corp Chairman Chen Chengjung and Siemens Turnkey Systems Manager Karl Neubeck on August 10.

The deal covers 126 EMU cars, signalling, power supply equipment and consultancy services on the 28·3 km north-south Red line from Kang Shan to Lin Hain and the 14·4 km east-west Orange line. The contract was signed in Singapore to permit neutral arbitration should any dispute arise. Following the award of the concession contract earlier this year (RG 2.01 p82), construction is expected to get under way next month for completion in October 2007.
