Organised by the Union of European Railway Engineer Associations (UEEIV) in conjunction with the French Railways Engineers & Executives Association (AFFI), the Rail 21 congress and exhibition took place in Strasbourg between May 19 and 22.

Rolling stock and other vehicles on display at SNCF’s Cronenbourg freight terminal included infrastructure maintenance equipment such as the PEM807 gantry and LEM460 powered lifting units from Fassetta [Photo 1] which have been used to handle panels during track replacement work on SNCF’s high-speed routes.

In response to a future SNCF requirement, Ecomeca has developed a prototype VRRMC road/rail catenary inspection vehicle [2], equipped with a rear lifting platform and capable of speeds up to 50 km/h on rail. In conjunction with Spie Enertrans, Ecomeca has developed the self-propelled Lama unit, which can transfer from road to rail in 1min 30sec. Units equipped with lifting platforms [3] have been used to install optic fibre cables on catenary masts along SNCF’s Rennes - Redon route, and a rail welding unit has also been developed.

Amongst the many Geismar products on display was the BRM ballast tamper [4]. MTH Praha presented the SC600 ballast cleaner with a working speed upwards of 50m/hour, seen here [5] with the PA300 Bo-Bo diesel electric power unit, rated at 340 kW.
