Bulgaria: Sofia has called tenders for the construction of a 2·3 km extension of the city’s metro to the World Trade Centre, financed by a US$104m loan from JBIC.

Canada: The city of Niagara Falls has invited expressions of interest in building and operating a 10·3 km circular peoplemover serving the tourist areas; 12 stations are initially planned.

China: Spanish company Indra has won a €11m contract to develop and install ticketing equipment at 19 stations on the 45 km light metro network being built in Tianjin. The 13-month contract covers magnetic and contactless tickets.

France: Paris metro operator RATP has placed a contract with Indra to develop and install ticket machines for sales of contactless smart cards. Only cashless payment will be accepted. A prototype will be followed by production of 40 pre-production units, with 1200 to be supplied in the long term.

Spain: Alstom has been awarded two 25-year contracts worth a total of €179m to maintain the Trambaix and Trambes
