Germany: A 7·7 km extension of the München U-Bahn serving the trade fair on the site of the former airport at Riem was opened on May 31. Built at a cost of DM780m, the line offers a 10min interval service, with trains taking 22min to Messestadt Ost from the main station.

Great Britain: Drake & Scull has awarded Siemens Instabus EIB a contract to supply platform lighting controls for Westminster, Waterloo, Southwark, London Bridge, Bermondsey and Canary Wharf stations on the London Underground Jubilee line extension.

Netherlands: From June 7 to 17 Amsterdam Transport tested a 100% low-floor Adtranz LRV loaned by Duisburg Transport. The five-section vehicle ran in revenue service on various lines of the Amsterdam network.

Portugal: Cinclus, GIBB and ICF Kaiser International have won a US$19m contract for construction management services on the Porto light rail network, on which work started in May for completion in five years (RG 12.98 p863).

Singapore: SMRT has selected Westinghouse Signals to replace its current Automatic Train Supervision System with Windows-based Westcad control centre technology. Signalling, communications and fare collection will switch to the new system over the next three years.

USA: Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is to order 30 low-floor LRVs from Kinki Sharyo USA Inc at a cost of $86m. The cars are to be used on the Tasman East route currently under construction, as well as the projected Capitol and Vasona lines.

Ceremonies were held on May 24 to mark the start of tracklaying on the St Clair extension of the St Louis Metrolink light rail network. The 28 km route from East St Louis to Belleville Area College is expected to open in 2001.

MTA New York City Transit has ordered 580 more MetroCard vending machines from Cubic Transportation Systems for $33·4m; they are scheduled for delivery by the end of 2000.

Canada: The SAR Transit joint venture of Agra Monenco, SC Infrastructure and Rizzani de Eccher has been awarded a C$208m civil works contract for Vancouver’s second SkyTrain route from Broadway to New Westminster.

The City of Edmonton has given formal approval for planning work to start on a C$465m extension of the light rail system from University of Alberta to Heritage Mall. With six new stations, the route could be operational by 2009 depending on the availability of funding.
