Tel Aviv mass transit promoter NTA Ltd has appointed DeLeuw Cather to undertake preliminary design of its 18 km first line between Petah Tikwa, Tel Aviv and Bat Yam. The route is to be designed as a pre-metro light rail line suitable for conversion to heavy metro in future, but NTA is now also looking at the scope for dual-mode operation on Israel Railways tracks.

Trials with smart cards in Berlin are to start in the autumn. Berlin Transport Authority will issue 25000 cards for passengers to use on U-Bahn Lines 2 and 4, tram route 5 and two bus routes. plus the S-Bahn between Zoo and Alexanderplatz. BVG’s partner for the development is Motorola.
