German Railway is spending over DM120m in a programme to refurbish its couchette and sleeping car fleet. From the start of the summer timetable at the end of May, overnight trains will be marketed as ’DB Nachtzug’. Marketing and management will be in the hands of DB AutoZug, a DB Reise & Touristik subsidiary.

DB’s aim is to provide uniform standards of service and quality for most of its night train network, but this will depend on progress with the refurbishment programme. Some routes will be changed and a simpler fares structure is to be introduced.

  • DB has designated two cars in all ICE services for mobile phone users. The cars have been fitted with repeaters to strengthen the signals for mobile phones. Special areas with improved noise insulation have been created for those not wishing to share mobile phone conversations, and passengers can reserve seats in either zone if they wish.
