FRENCH National Railways and the French Post Office plan to form an alliance for express freight and parcels traffic. Proposals put to the boards of both organisations on March 30 envisage that the ensuing alliance would have an annual turnover of Fr38bn.

The proposals will end competition between the two organisations and set up a company with considerable expertise in logistics, able to compete in the European market. SNCF would relinquish control of its Geodis subsidiary by reducing its holding from 43·6% to 24·5%, with La Poste taking a 24% share. In exchange La Poste will cede 60% of the capital in Société Holding des Filiales Colis et Logistique to a new company owned 51% by La Poste and 49% by Geodis.
