Phillippine National Railways and Siemens are to carry out a 100m peso feasibility study for the Mindanao railway project, which would link Butan, Davao and General Santos.

A consortium of local industries and broad gauge operator Nuevo Central Argentino is reported to have expressed interest in acquiring a stake in Belgrano Cargas under the government’s emerging privatisation scheme. Other potential bidders are believed to include RailAmerica and a consortium including Genesee & Wyoming which holds a stake in the connecting Eastern Railway in Bolivia.

Vietnam Railways is proposing the construction of a railway linking Hanoi with Cai Lan port at a cost of 3 200bn dong. Work could get underway next year for completion on 2008.

Union Pacific has released a proposal to divert its central Texas line to allow the existing route to be used for Austin - San Antonio commuter services. Around 29 km of new track would be required for the estimated $500m project, which would increase freight speeds by eliminating level crossings.
