Jubilee Line Extension: From Concept to Completion

Bob Mitchell

This major reference work provides a record of all aspects of the 10-year project to extend London Underground’s Jubilee line from Green Park to Stratford. The planning and political procedures are traced from the emergence of the first proposals in 1943, through the final authorisation of the scheme, to the opening of the extension in 1999.

Whereas other publications have focused mainly on the construction element of the work, this book considers topics including planning and design, the parliamentary processes, the route selected, station design, plus safety and engineering aspects. Financial issues including the proposed and actual involvement of private sector funding are considered. The time and cost over-runs for which the scheme ’became infamous’ are discussed, as is the close interest the public took through political and media scrutiny.

Bob Mitchell has extensive first-hand experience of the Jubilee Line Extension. During the first two years of the scheme he was Stations & Systems Design Manager, and he spent the project’s final two years as General Manager, Finance & Administration.

The 384 page hard-back book is illustrated with numerous maps, diagrams and black and white photographs.
