GROUND-penetrating radar and ultrasonic testing are being combined to allow non-destructive testing firm Aperio to assess the condition of concrete sleepers.

The radar can rapidly provide a detailed picture of the extent of any erosion on the underside of the sleepers on a graduated scale. The slower ultrasonic testing is then used on a smaller selection of sleepers to calibrate the range of the GPR results.

Use of handheld instruments allows Aperio staff to take measurements between trains on a live railway. Sampling a selection of sleepers along a route allows track maintenance planning to be optimised without the need to disturb the track or formation for visual inspection.
