ON JUNE 27 Lithuanian Railways’ Gelmagis subsidiary inaugurated a long-welded rail plant in Silenai, removing the need for LG to buy-in welding services from Latvia and Belarus.

Geismar supplied equipment worth 20m litai for the plant in the north of the country, which employs 16 staff. In addition to supplying the domestic market with 115 km of rail a year, Gelmagis plans to export rails to Latvia and other neighbouring countries.

H VAE Legetecha is spending 500000 litai to modernise its facilities for the production of turnouts with concrete bearers. In 2005 the company’s sales totalled 29m litai, down from 32m the previous year.
