CRUSTACEAN shells inspired the design of Karapace, pairs of interlocking precast concrete components which can be used to create retaining walls up to 7·5m high.

The reinforced concrete units can be installed directly onto a prepared substrate and then loaded from either side. They can be dismantled for reuse elsewhere.

’By virtue of its flexibility and design it can be effective in a wide range of environments where strength and protection are vital - from foundations and retaining walls through to pipe protection, slope stabilisation and water defence’, said Brian Mees, Sales Director at Milbury Systems. ’A feature of the product is its simplicity and the speed of installation. Where the soil is of suitable standard there is no need for foundations. In many cases it is possible to backfill the units with excavated material, a useful feature on brown-field sites.’
