ON APRIL 8 GEC Alsthom announced that its German subsidiary Linke-Hofmann-Busch had won a contract to supply 112 suburban trainsets for Danish State Railways’ København S-bane, in consortium with Siemens Transportation Systems. Some local assembly work is due to be undertaken by the Danish arm of Adtranz in Randers. Total price of the order is put at DKr7·25bn.

DSB has exercised an option in its 1992 contract for LHB to supply eight prototype trainsets to an innovative wide-bodied multi-articulated design (RG 2.97 p115). Two of the eight-section trainsets are already in service, and the other six will follow over the next year or two. The first of the 112 series-built sets is due to be delivered in February 1999; the last will arrive in 2005, enabling DSB to replace its entire S-bane fleet.

The placing of the order follows approval of DSB’s funding proposals by the finance committee of the Danish parliament. o
