LAUNCHED at the UITP Mobility & City Transit exhibition in May, Seltrac FB communications-based train control from Alcatel can be used as a stand-alone or overlay system. It is aimed primarily at the urban market, and an initial demonstration on the Paris metro is planned for later this year.

Expanding the existing Seltrac range from its moving-block roots, Seltrac FB is a fixed-block version, but the block length is defined using software logic and is not dependent upon physical track circuits. Alcatel describes this concept as ’vehicle-centric’. Track-train communication is by digital radio.

The modular nature of Seltrac FB is designed to allow operators to install elements of the package and gradually uprate the functionality as necessary to meet changing requirements. At the base level is an ATP overlay for existing signalling, which is compatible with ETCS specifications, and at the top of the range is a full ATO solution offering headways of under 90 sec.
