INTRO: Third East European & Asian Rail Summit at InnoTrans 2004

As part of the InnoTrans Convention, the third East European & Asian Rail Summit will be held on September 20-22. EEARS is specifically tailored towards the interests of railways in Central and Eastern Europe and in Asia. Alongside the BahnBau conference and company presentations, the EEARS Summit is one of the highlights of the InnoTrans 2004 supporting programme.

Transport ministers and railway chiefs from major countries in Eastern Europe and Asia have been invited to the EEARS Summit on September 21. This year’s Summit will focus on cross-border traffic between Asia and Western Europe. The experts’ forum will discuss how this traffic can flow without hindrance at borders.

Rails and turnouts

The rail systems division of Austria’s Voestalpine group plans to invest €66 million in a new rail rolling mill in Donawitz, Austria, which is due to start operation at the end of 2005 or in early 2006. According to Josef Mülner, head of Voestalpine Division Bahnsysteme, the new facility will offer increased flexibility in production and simplify stocking. He says VAE Bahnsysteme is the world’s only manufacturer currently able to produce 120 metre long head-hardened rails.
