SBB has placed an order worth SFr262m with Bombardier for 140 low-floor centre cars to upgrade its NPZ EMU fleet. The vehicles will replace older coaches that were refurbished as intermediate cars to lengthen the two-car EMU sets after they were built in the 1980s. The Bombardier vehicles are being delivered with air-conditioning, and SBB is to invest a further SFr64m to retrofit air-conditioning to the original NPZ cars. The order is part of a raft of measures that SBB is taking to upgrade its regional and Z?rich S-Bahn services, worth a total of SFr326m over the next three years. By 2010, SBB hopes that the entire S-Bahn fleet will have step-free access, while automated passenger information systems will be installed at 750 SBB stations by 2009.
