GERMAN regional rail operator Regental Bahnbetriebs-Gesellschaft has reached agreement to run its Vogtlandbahn services into the centre of Zwickau over the tracks of the local tram network. The company’s eight RegioSprinter low-floor diesel railcars are to be fitted with direction indicators, brake lights, warning bells and electric point actuators for street running.

A connection between the railway and tram networks is to be built at the city’s main station, and Zwickau is to lay an additional rail along the metre-gauge route into the city centre to accommodate the standard-gauge trains from Plauen and towns close to the Czech border. Through running is expected to start with the 1998-99 winter timetable. o
