The transport of bicycles is to be permitted on the Pune Metro. ‘Once upon a time, Pune was a cycle user’s city, but over the years because of unavailability of robust public transport use of two-wheelers and four-wheelers increased disproportionately’, said Maharashtra Metro Rail Corp. ’This led to uncontrolled vehicle use, congestion in traffic, pollution, cost of travelling, and time. The MahaMetro urges people to use bicycles so that Pune again goes back to its glory as “City of Cycles”. Owing to the use of bicycles onboard metro trains, the issue of first and last-mile connectivity will be addressed.’

The Asian Development Bank and the government of India have signed a US$500m loan to support the construction of two elevated metro lines in Bengaluru. The lines along Outer Ring Road and National Highway 44 between Central Silk Board and Kempegowda International Airport will total 56 km with 30 stations. An additional US$2m technical assistance grant from ADB will help the state government to formulate urban development plans and strengthen the capacity of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corp.

Delhi metro station toilet

To ‘provide safe space and prevent gender discrimination against transgender people’, Delhi Metro Rail Corp has said metro station toilets which are dedicated for disabled users are also available to transgender users. English, Hindi and symbol signage has been installed. Other toilets can continue to be used on a self-identifying basis, and DMRC said it is considering providing separate facilities at stations on Phase IV of the network.
