The $1·9bn mostly underground extension of Seattle’s Link light rail line running 6·9 km from the University of Washington to Northgate opened on October 2. A further 13·7 km taking the route to Lynnwood is under construction for opening in 2024.

A 4·3 km western extension of Changchun metro Line 2 from Shuangfeng to Qiche Gongyuan opened on October 8, taking the east-west line to 24·9 km with 21 stations.

Thales has been awarded a seven-year contract to supply 1 350 new fare collection gates for Singapore’s North-South, East-West and Circle lines as well as the future Jurong Region Line. The gates will have standardised slimmer swing flaps and support contactless technologies.

Alstom has appointed Certifer Italia to provide independent safety assessment services for the modernisation of CAF MA300 trains on the Roma metro network and the technically similar fleet for Roma - Lido line.

ST Engineering and the MSI Global subsidiary of Singapore’s Land Transport Authority have signed a memorandum of understanding for collaboration to provide electronics for rail projects around the world. ST Engineering will contribute its expertise in metro control, communication and asset management systems, platform screen doors, fare and information systems, while MSI Global will provide its expertise in ticketing and payment software, systems integration and project management.

Hong Kong’s MTR Corp has appointed Ricky Lau Chun-kit as non-executive director. He succeeds Lam Sai-hung as Permanent Secretary for Development (Works) and a member of each of the Capital Works Committee and the Risk Committee.

The European Bank for Reconstruction & Development is considering providing a loan of up to €20·3m to the city of Timișoara to support the improvement of public transport services including renewal of the tram fleet and infrastructure and an update of the city’s sustainable urban mobility plan.
