Alstom delivers Torino metro Line 1 trainset (image GTT)

On June 6 Alstom delivered the first of four trainsets it is supplying for Torino’s automated rubber-tyred light metro Line 1 under a €156m contracted awarded in February 2022 which also includes CBTC. 

On June 1 Chattogram City Corporation and a joint venture of Orascom Group and Arab Contractors signed a MoU to undertake a feasibility study for a monorail. A 55 km mass transit system was proposed for the city formerly known as Chittagong in 2019 but not progressed, and in 2021 Chinese company WETech proposed a monorail. Mayor Shahadat Hossain told local media ‘Chittagong has turned into a city of traffic jams. We urgently need a fast, efficient solution’.

Washington DC’s Metro has launched a MetroPulse mobile app which passengers can use to plan trips, contact customer service and report issues. This builds on a website launched in 2023. A live chat allows people to send photos and videos directly to customer service staff to have safety and security concerns addressed. ‘We are striving to take the guesswork out of transit and streamline as much as possible so more people will choose our trains and buses over other forms of travel’, said Metro General Manager & CEO Randy Clarke. ‘MetroPulse puts the real-time information customers need right in their pockets in a native app that is easy to use and navigate.’

The Philippines’ Department of Transportation held a project management consultancy market engagement event on June 4 for the planned Manila metro Line 4 project to link the Ortigas and Taytay areas.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Transportation & Communications has reported 32·6% overall progress on the Taoyuan Red Line project. This involves rebuilding an 18 km section of Taiwan Railway’s 1 067 mm gauge Western Line from southwest of Pingzhen station to southeast of Fengming station in tunnel to allow the operation of dense suburban services. Handover of the first section is expected in 2033.   

This month NJ Transit is to issue a request for qualifications to design and build the Northern Rail Maintenance-of-Way facility in Clifton, Passaic County, New Jersey. This will replace its ageing and flood-prone Wood-Ridge site and provide modern facilities to support maintenance, servicing and repair activities. 

Econpile has been awarded a 43m ringgit contract CMC1 covering bored piling construction and associated works for the East Jelutong to Gelugor section of the Penang LRT Mutiara Line medium capacity metro project. 

The Los Angeles Sports & Entertainment Commission has named Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority as Official Public Transit Provider for the Los Angeles World Cup 2026 Host City. ‘Metro will help ensure that fans can get to these unforgettable events safely, sustainably and seamlessly’, said Janice Hahn, Metro Board Chair and LA County Supervisor.
