AUGUST 18 sees the start of revenue operation on the Lille metro Line 2 extension from Fort de Mons to Tourcoing Centre, adding 12·5 route-km and 16 stations to the network. The extension was formally handed over to operator Transpole by the Lille Urban Community on June 21, ready for the start of test running.

The fourth section of Line 2 serves Villeneuve d’Ascq, Wasquehal, Croix, Roubaix and Tourcoing. Interchange is provided to Mongy light rail services at Wasquehal Pavé de Lille, Roubaix Eurotéléport and Tourcoing Centre. To work the extended route, Transpole will be putting into service the first of 60 second-generation VAL208 trainsets, being supplied by Matra Transport International (RG 6.99 p352). These will augment the existing fleet of VAL206 cars.
