KOWLOON - CANTON Railway Corp invited expressions of interest on August 12 for detailed design work on the 30·5 km first phase of the WestRail commuter link between Kowloon and Tuen Mun. Consultants have been invited to prequalify for five packages, covering the Yuen Long, Tuen Mun, Tsuen Wan and Sham Shui Po sections of route, and the depot and stations.

KCRC awarded four contracts worth HK$46m on July 30 covering the remaining work in the West Rail technical studies programme. These are due for completion by mid-1998. Halcrow Asia Partnership and Transportation Systems & Market Research Ltd are to develop designs of ballasted and non-ballasted trackwork, whilst ARSC Surveying & Mapping is to provide aerial and topographical surveys. Booz·Allen & Hamilton Australia is to determine the train control requirements and assist with prequalification.

Seven firms have each been awarded a development contract for signalling and train control, enabling them to put forward detailed technical proposals. They are: Westinghouse Signals, GEC Alsthom Signalling, CSEE Transport, Alcatel Canada, Siemens, General Railway Signal, and Adtranz Signal AB. o
