SIEMENS Transportation Systems announced on August 14 that it had signed a €334m contract to supply CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co with components for the construction of 500 heavy-haul electric locos.

Due to enter service with Chinese Railways from early 2009, the 150 tonne, six-axle freight locos will be rated at 5·6 MW and have a top speed of 120 km/h. Design and production of the traction systems will be undertaken at the Siemens sites in Erlangen and Nürnberg, with the locos assembled at ZELC’s plant in Zhuzhou, China.

'This is the third freight locomotive order we’ve received from China since 1997, making us the most successful foreign supplier in this sector' said Jörn F Sens, Executive Vice-President of Siemens TS. 'Two locomotives which we had recently delivered were able to haul a 20?000 tonne train instead of the four units previously required. All this proves that our products can compete successfully in this hotly contested market.'
