The Land said a direct award was justified as a market survey had found that only DB Regio had access to suitable vehicles.

GERMANY: The Land of Thüringen and a group of local transport authorities have awarded incumbent DB Regio a contract to continue to operate regional passenger services using tilting trainsets from the end of the current agreement on December 12 2021 until December 9 2028.

The contract covers services on three routes totalling 4·4 million train-km/year:

  • RE1 Göttingen – Leinefelde – Erfurt – Gera – Glauchau;
  • RE3 Erfurt – Jena – Gera – Altenburg/Greiz;
  • RE7 Erfurt – Grimmenthal – Würzburg and Ebenhausen – Bad Kissingen.

The contract was awarded to the incumbent as the operations require the use of tilting diesel multiple-units, and a market survey had found that only DB Regio had access to suitable vehicles.
