GERMANY: Rhein-Ruhr transport authority VRR has announced its intention to direct award local authority owned Regiobahn a contract to operate new passenger service RE47 between Remscheid-Lennep, Solingen and Düsseldorf.

The contract is to run for six years from the December 2022 timetable change.

Services will be operated using Jenbacher Werke Integral diesel multiple-units. These were previously used by Bayerische Oberlandbahn before being replaced by Alstom Lint DMUs and acquired by Regiobahn in 2020.

Meanwhile, the Düsseldorf district authority has granted planning approval for 15 kV 16·7 Hz electrification of the last section of Regiobahn route S28 through the Neandertal between Mettmann Stadtwald and Düsseldorf Gerresheim.

The €60m project is to be funded by the Land of Nordrhein-Westfalen (30%) and the federal government (60%).
