EUROPE: Slovakian MEP Maroš Šefcovic (photo) has been nominated in the college of European Commission President-Elect Jean-Claude Juncker as Commissioner for Transport & Space, with responsibility for the DG MOVE directorate-general. Šefcovic will also supervise the activities of the European Railway Agency.
Provided his appointment is ratified by a vote in the European Parliament, he will succeed Siim Kallas in the post. Šefcovic is a former Slovak ambassador to Israel, and served as Vice-President of the European Commission responsible for Inter-Institutional Relations & Administration between 2010 and 2012. He was elected as an MEP at the European elections in May.
