DENMARK: The first tram-train section of the Aarhus Letbane light rail network opened on August 25 with the start of operations on the 29 km southern section between Aarhus H and Odder, serving 16 stations.

The railway linking Aarhus and Odder closed in 2016 for upgrading including electrification. It will eventually be connected through the centre of Aarhus to the northern section of the tram-train route on the converted railway to Grenaa.

A 3 km extension of the tram section of the network also opened on the same day, from Universitetshospitalet to Lisbjergskolen.

In July 2014 light rail project promoter Aarhus Letbane selected a consortium of Stadler and Ansaldo STS for a turnkey contract to build and equip the route.

The 12 km first phase opened on December 21 2017 between Aarhus H and Universitetshospitalet. This new-build section will eventually connect with the tram-train line at Lystrup north of Aarhus.

Stadler has supplied 14 low-floor Variobahn trams and 12 three-section Tango tram-trains.
