Fehmarn Belt immersed tunnel

DENMARK: An exhibition opened at the Legoland theme park in Billund this summer shows how the 18 km immersed tunnel for the Fehmarn Belt fixed link is being constructed.

It includes a model of the concrete tunnel section factory, work vessels, the immersion of tunnel sections, traffic on the construction site and local sights from both Denmark and northern Germany.

Project promoter Sund & Bælt said the construction industry is experiencing a growing shortage of skilled labour, and the exhibition aims to inspire the next generation of young people to choose vocational training in the future.

Main contractor Femern Link Contractors is required to train at least 500 apprentices during the construction period.

Sund & Bælt CEO Mikkel Hemmingsen said ‘we believe that this exhibition will help inspire many and spark an interest in some of the children who are playing today but may be the builders of tomorrow’.
