CHINA: December 18 saw the inauguration of three metro extensions in Shanghai, completing the metro development plan announced in 2005. Under the next phase of the city’s metro expansion programme, four new lines and extensions to five lines are due to open by the end of 2020.

A 21·4 km underground extension of Line 12 southwest from Qufu Road to Qixin Road adds 16 stations, including nine interchanges. The end-to-end journey time on the new section is 37 min.

This takes Line 12 to a total length of 40·4 km with 32 stations. The line is operated by a fleet of 41 six-car Movia metro trainsets supplied by Changchun Bombardier Railway Vehicles Co.

Line 13 has nine new stations on a 9·8 km underground extension from Changshou Road to Shibo Avenue.

Line 11 has been extended by 8·6 km from Luoshan Road to Kangxin Highway on an elevated alignment with two stations. A further extension to the Shanghai Disney resort is scheduled to open in 2016.

The newly opened extensions bring the total network length to 617 route-km.
