BULGARIA: Sofia city transport operator Elektrotransport has taken delivery of a further 15 ČKD Type T6A5 trams acquired second-hand from Praha at a cost of KC5·69m.

The trams dating from 1995-97 were surplus to requirements in the Czech capital following the delivery of large numbers of Škoda Transportation 14T and 15T low-floor cars.

One of the 15 will be used as a source of spare parts, while the other 14 will replace ex-Leipzig Tatra T4D and B4D vehicles dating back to the 1980s on the 1 435 mm gauge Route 20 from Depo Iskar to Opalchenska.

Sofia bought 40 similar T6A5 trams from Praha between April 2016 and June 2019, some of which underwent a major refurbishment. The city also operates 37 ČKD-built T6B5 trams on its 1 435 mm gauge routes, which were delivered in 1989, as well as 56 T6A2 trams supplied in 1990-99 for its 1 009 mm gauge lines.
